Dolomites

June 2011

After a week of work in Venice, Rachel was ready to have a vacation of her own. We drove three hours north to Castelrotto, in the heart of the Dolomites.

Dolomites

A three hour drive north of Venice lies a very unique and beautiful mountain range.

Day 1: Arrival

01

We rented a car in Venice and drove up to Castelrotto to Garni Silbernagl. This was the view from our balcony.

02

We arrived near dinner time, so we didn't have time to explore. However, we enjoyed a nice meal at Saalhofstuben.

Day 2: Alpe di Siusi

03

We drove about 30 minutes to Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm in German) which is the largest high altitude meadow in Europe.

04

While we were unable to do everything we wanted due to it being the off season and things were closed, it was worth it to have this meadow to ourselves.

05 The clouds were moving fast and changed the scenery every few minutes.

Dolomites

06 Schlern, it dominates the towns below.

07

We loved looking at Schlern (I feel like it should be Mt. Schlern, but Wikipedia says no) so much we stopped into Hotel Gstatsch for a couple glasses of wine at this very window. I believe Rachel has a video of me professing my love for that mountain.

08

We had to stop on the way home because the fog got so thick.

Day 3: Pordoi Pass

09

I had to talk Rachel into taking the cable car up. The car getting enveloped by a cloud didn't help her state of mind.

The top of Pordoi Pass provides an amazing 360 degree view.

11 About to take the cable car back down.
